Those of you who are young students, this sacred duty is, in truth, morally placed on your shoulders: to understand what democracy is, and to build a democratic system suited to Bangladesh, to build a democratic environment suited to Bangladesh.
So, first of all, let us understand what democracy is. I will not go into the debates of philosophers, because philosophers see politics from one point of view, and politicians see politics from another point of view.
Let me come to Abraham Lincoln's famous definition. Don't you know it? What is the definition of democracy? Who can tell me? What did Abraham Lincoln say about democracy? By the people, of the people, for the people, right? By the people, for the people, and of the people. Isn't it? This is the most effective definition of democracy. But in our Bangladesh, does this definition work?

আপনারা যারা তরুণ শিক্ষার্থী আছেন, আপনাদের কাঁধে আসলে এই পবিত্র দায়িত্বটা নৈতিকভাবে অর্পিত হয়। গণতন্ত্র কী, সেটা বোঝা এবং বাংলাদেশের জন্য উপযুক্ত একটি গণতান্ত্রিক পদ্ধতি বিনির্মাণ করা, বাংলাদেশের জন্য উপযুক্ত একটি গণতান্ত্রিক পরিবেশ নির্মাণ করা।
তো, সবার আগে আসেন বুঝি গণতন্ত্র কী। আমি কোনো দার্শনিকের আলাপে যাব না, কারণ দার্শনিকরা রাজনীতিকে দেখেন এক দৃষ্টিভঙ্গিতে, আর রাজনীতিবিদ, তারা রাজনীতিকে দেখেন আরেক দৃষ্টিভঙ্গিতে।
আমি আব্রাহাম লিংকনের সেই বিখ্যাত সংজ্ঞায় আসি। আপনারা জানেন না, গণতন্ত্রের সংজ্ঞা কী? কে বলতে পারেন? আব্রাহাম লিংকন কী বলেছেন গণতন্ত্র নিয়ে? By the people, of the people, for the people, না? মানুষের দ্বারা, মানুষের জন্য, মানুষের নিয়ে। তাই না, এটা হচ্ছে গণতন্ত্রের সবচেয়ে কার্যকরী সংজ্ঞা। কিন্তু আমাদের বাংলাদেশে কি এই সংজ্ঞা কার্যকরী?

Our universities are failing. When the Fifteenth Amendment to the Constitution was passed, which university's students stood in the streets and protested? Which university's teachers took to the streets? Is the duty of university students only to become bureaucrats? Is the duty of teachers only to give lectures in class as a mere formality? No! Bangladesh's academia has failed.
Look at Harvard. Harvard did not stop, even when Donald Trump threatened to cut its funding. Oxford has been serving the people for a thousand years. Look at Socrates. He walked the streets, explaining to people what their rights were. What are you doing, and what am I doing?

আমাদের বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়গুলো ব্যর্থ হচ্ছে। যখন সংবিধানের পঞ্চদশ সংশোধনী হলো, তখন কোন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষার্থীরা রাস্তায় দাঁড়িয়ে আন্দোলন করেছে? কোন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষকবৃন্দ রাস্তায় নেমেছেন? বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষার্থীদের দায়িত্ব কি শুধু আমলা হওয়া? শিক্ষকদের দায়িত্ব কি শুধু ক্লাসে নমো নমো করে বক্তব্য দিয়ে যাওয়া? না! বাংলাদেশের একাডেমিয়া ফেইল করেছে।
হার্ভার্ডকে দেখেন হার্ভার্ড ডোনাল্ড ট্রাম্পের ফান্ডিং বন্ধ করার হুমকিতেও থামেনি। অক্সফোর্ড সেই হাজার বছর ধরে জনগণের সেবা করে আসছে। আপনি সক্রেটিসকে দেখেন, সে রাস্তায় হেঁটে হেঁটে মানুষকে বোঝাতো, তোমার রাইটস কী। আপনি কী করছেন, আমি কী করছি?
